The Somerset Levels contain some of England’s most important lowland peat. When peat remains wet and healthy it stores carbon; when it is drained and degraded it can become a significant source of emissions.
Restoration work around Shapwick Heath and the wider Levels is therefore not cosmetic conservation. Rewetting, habitat restoration and better water management can support biodiversity, carbon storage and flood resilience at the same time.
